Gaza’s Endless Cycle of Violence: A Grim Reminder of Failure to End Hostilities

The latest round of violence in Gaza has left at least one Palestinian dead and over a dozen wounded, with a mosque reduced to rubble and hundreds more displaced by Israeli strikes. This cycle of violence has become all too predictable, with the international community watching as Gaza descends into chaos, only for some semblance of calm to return before being shattered once more by Israel’s military might.

The attack on Al-Muttaqin Mosque is particularly galling because it represents yet another example of the devastating impact of war on civilians. It’s also part of a broader pattern of destruction and desecration that has become synonymous with Israeli actions in Gaza, including the targeting of mosques, homes, and schools.

Meanwhile, settler violence against Palestinians continues unabated in the West Bank. In Abu Najim, an entire family was forced from their home after being threatened with fire. This image is a heart-wrenching reminder that for many Palestinians, their own land has become a battleground.

The incremental nature of Israel’s land grab is also disturbing. With each passing day, more Palestinian territory is seized by Israeli authorities, while new colonial outposts spring up on occupied lands. In Jenin alone, over 200 dunums of land have been confiscated as part of a broader push to redraw the map of Palestine.

As international pressure mounts for Israel to cease its attacks, it’s hard not to wonder what this says about the effectiveness – or otherwise – of current diplomatic efforts. The so-called “ceasefire” brokered by the US last October has failed to deliver on its promise of lasting peace. Instead, we’re left with a fragile truce that’s as brittle as it is temporary.

The recent attack on Al-Muttaqin Mosque also serves as a grim reminder that even places of worship are not immune from the ravages of war. Gaza’s people are caught between two enemies – both of whom seem determined to deny them their most basic human rights. What we’re seeing in Gaza is not just an example of Israeli aggression; it’s also a symptom of broader regional dynamics at play.

The conflict has its roots in the wider Middle East, with regional powers and international actors all pulling strings behind the scenes. But as the people of Gaza suffer, they remain largely invisible to the world – their struggles ignored or dismissed by those who might claim to care. For now, however, it seems we’ll be stuck in this endless cycle of violence – with no clear exit strategy in sight.

In recent weeks, there have been reports of grassroots efforts underway in Palestine and beyond to build support for a lasting peace. While these efforts are small, they’re worth noting nonetheless. As long as the cycle of violence continues, we’ll never truly be able to break free from it.
